LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) or laser scanning by drone creates exceptionally detailed digital models of landscape, vegetation, buildings and other assets. This makes it a great process for mapping and surveying landscape, quarries, stockpiles, roads and infrastructure, forestry, floods and complex structures such as powerlines.
LiDAR is capable of seeing through vegetation and providing extremely precise images of what lies underneath, revealing objects in a point cloud. The sheer volume of data that can be captured by UAV-mounted LiDAR also helps create comprehensive data to support more effective decision making.
If you need to map below the tree canopy or need to 'see' below obstructions, or you're modelling objects that require greater accuracy (representation of sharp edges on a building for example), then LiDAR is worth considering as an alternative to photogrammetry.
